Penoi's Veritas Volume Manager Notes

This is my personal notes on Veritas Volume Manager. This page is a continuing notes of frequent commands that i use in VxVM

Initialization

Disk initialization

/usr/lib/vxvm/bin/vxdisksetup -iv [device_tag][attributes]

Example:
#/usr/lib/vxvm/vxdisksetup -iv c2t0d0

Creation
Create initial disk group
vxdg init [diskgroup] [disk_name=device_tag]

Example:
#vxdg init newdg disk1=c2t0d0

Add more disk to the Disk Group
vxdg -g [disk_group] adddisk [disk_name=device_tag]

Example
#vxdg -g newdg adddisk disk2=c2t1d0

Volume Creation

Concatenated Volume

vxassist -g [disk group] make [volume_name] [size]

Example

#vxassist -g newdg make newvol 500m

Concatenated Volume by specifying the disk

# vxassist -g newdg make newvol disk02 disk03

Striped Volume

vxassist -g [disk group] make [volume_name] [length] layout=stripe ncol=n stripeunit=size

Example

#vxassist -g newdg make newvol 500m layout=stripe

Mirrored Volume

#vxassist -g newdg make newvol 500m layout=mirror

Viewing VxVM

View Disk Group disk info
#vxdisk -o alldgs list

View Sub disk
#vxprint -ls

View Plexes

Adding RTL8111B/RTL8111C network driver to Solaris Jumpstart

My jumpstart client has a builtin RTL8111B/RTL8111C network card. When i boot up the client thru PXE booting it gives me an error "no driver was found for the interface used to boot jumpstart"

Download the updated SUNWrge package, this holds the driver for rge

http://www.aplis.cz/SUNWrge.tar.gz

My Jumpstart image is shared thru NFS in /installer directory
#cd /installer/boot

Create a temporary miniroot directory
#mkdir x86.miniroot-rge.unpacked

Unpack the existing miniroot to the temp miniroot directory
#/boot/solaris/bin/root_archive unpack ./x86.miniroot ./x86.miniroot-rge.unpacked

Remove the existing SUNWrge package
#pkgrm SUNWrge

Add the updated SUNWrge package
#cd /export/home/john
#gunzip SUNWrge.tar.gz
#tar xvf SUNWrge.tar
#pkgadd -d . SUNWrge

Check the new aliases
#grep rge /etc/name_to_major /etc/driver_aliases
/etc/driver_aliases:rge "pci10ec,8169"
/etc/driver_aliases:rge "pci10ec,8110"
/etc/driver_aliases:rge "pci10ec,8168"
/etc/driver_aliases:rge "pci10ec,8111"

Remove the existing rge driver in the jumpstart miniroot
#cd /installer/boot
#/usr/sbin/rem_drv -b ./x86.miniroot-rge.unpacked/ rge

Add the new driver
#/usr/sbin/add_drv -b ./x86.miniroot-rge.unpacked  -n -v -m '* 0600 root sys' -i '"pci10ec,8169" "pci10ec,8110" "pci10ec,8168" "pci10ec,8111"' rge

Reboot client to install driver.
Driver (rge) installed.

Backup original miniroot
#mv x86.miniroot x86.miniroot.orig

Compress the new Jumpstart miniroot
#/boot/solaris/bin/root_archive pack ./x86.miniroot ./x86.miniroot-rge.unpacked/

Network Storage Foundation

Today we discussed introduction on NAS and SAN. Many companies offers such kind of technology product. Even the open source community has its own implementation like FreeNAS and NexentaStor. This will play a great part on my future jobs, so i have to deeply learn this technology.

Music is not allowed here??

yesterday we were warned by one of the trainors that listening to music while in training is not allowed eventhough we are using our headphones. I mean, music helps me to refocus on what im doing with my lab simulations instead of listening to other trainees discussion speaking on their native language in which i could not understand.

Music for the people

there will be two bands that i will meet in singapore. the first is the band of my college classmate allan. Their drummer left for another band and they are looking for someone to fillin the part. Paolo, my high school/college bandmate during the 90's rock era buzzed me and he is planning to form a group that will play regularly in The Arena, a regular joint for Filipinos in Singapore.

It turns out that i can still pursue my music career(hopefully) coz im not done yet :)

St. Paul College Pasig (SPCP) goes Microsoft

St. Paul College Pasig (SPCP) replaces its open source OS installed computers to Microsoft Vista and Office 2007. This indeed a very sad day for the Free Software Advocacy movement of the Philippines. Students and faculty complains that they use Microsoft in their home (hopefully it is legal :) ) which very much different to the open source softwares installed on their labs.

Life is a non-stop learning. After being in the training center for 8 hours, i will still spend my night reading, taking notes and do simulation. On my desk, you will see my laptop, a bottle of Mountain Dew, Lays, notebook and my ballpen. Though its hard, i enjoy learning new things and comparing that information to the things that i already know. It feels like im back in college. Listening and completing every tasks of the program. We are almost done with our 3rd week of training.. Five weeks to go!!!!

OFW Currency Conversion

One of the biggest concern of an Overseas Filipino Worker is what is the latest Philippine Peso exchange rate. I once used Yahoo Currency converter but since Monday, Yahoo sites were blocked by our admins :(

One site that im using right now is Gocurrency.com. They even have a graph of currency trends. From US dollar to Philippine Peso, from Singapore Dollar to Philippine Peso.. Name it, you got it. :)
